We had our temperatures checked and sat in the air-conditioned bus for the journey across the city to the medicine and spice market where SWMBO bought tea and some dried orange peel which SMBO assures is a great addition to tea and soups. We then carried on walking to the pedestrian walkway which spans the monstrous traffic intersection, climbed the circular stairs and then descended to the ancient foot bridge onto Shamian Island. We walked around Shamian Island and indulged in a cup of tea and a slice of cake expensive and mediocre each while sheltering from the afternoon heat and humidity 36C and 70%. Be aware that everything is expensive on Shamian Island. We then retraced our steps, crossed the bridge, and headed for the fish market. Its official name is Huangsha Aquatic Products, but everybody calls it The Fish Market. The revamped QingPing market area still gives the feeling of the bygone era with bulk bales of everything being traded and packaged for shipping. These days they use masking tape and iPhones as their is more than one building, so you should wander through the small streets which still have produce akong either side, and then drift into the 3-4 level buildings packed with all kinds of weird stuff as noted in many posts. Ginseng is a big seller and responsible for some of the pungent aromas you will experience. On the street level you will find antique and trinket shops with some real and some replica pieces, coins, opium pipes, swords, walking sticks, pottery and figurines. They also have live pets like Aquarium fish, turtles, puppies and kittens along some streets. The area takes up a few blocks between Shamian Island and the Holiday Inn hotel. If you go through the underpass under the Holiday Inn, you can wander down into the market area which ends on the large road separating the markets from Shamian Island. After you can head over to Shamian or back to the Holiday Inn which is on one of the 2 old walking streets in old Guangzhou called Dishifu Road. Worth a wander. Interesting that it has a skating rink, amusement park/arcade, and rainforest park all within the fast food options asian/western and also has sit down family including our 3 school-age children had fun there and spent several hours at the mall. It was very difficult to orientate directions but there are some signs showing where a certain corridor leads towards. There are some exits with escalators some distance in between and intermittent fire escapes which are poorly or not lit. The merchandise here caters mainly to a younger shopper crowd. Somewhere probably in the center, I chanced upon an area with many traditional Chinese backdrops great for taking photographs. That is a very interesting area and there are also a hands on pottery making shop and some painting shops where one can paint over 3D model toys or display figurines. Stores included Xiaomi, Lego, Uniqlou, a fakeish Scandinavian design store with made up Nordic names of goods not NoMe, Muji, Aeon grocery and many more high quality international and Chinese brands. Most goods are of a mid-range and above quality and priced to reflect the quality of the mall and the goods sold. Easy access to the subway station. Tower are named by seasons. Winter tower is still under renovation. It had Wanda IMAX Cinema and it was about a five minute walk to Feixiang Metro Stop, Exit C. It also had Walmart, 7-eleven, Sephora, Watson, and H&M. It had a lot of restaurants and electronics shops, too. The Hilton Hotel was right next door. I ate the Chinese restaurant next to Wanda Cinema at Wanda Plaza Mall and it was pretty decent. The food came quick and the service was all right. However, on the same floor top floor, the southeast Asian restaurant was horrible. Avoid at all costs. It was overpriced and the service was non-existent. The entire wait staff was rude and management did not care at all. My friend waited five minutes to be seated and no one came to seat him; although they were not busy at all and they had a few people just standing around trying to show you how little they care about their jobs and customers. Finally, when someone came, the guy asked him "what are you looking for?" What does the waiter expect? It is a restaurant. The obvious answer is that I would like a table and I want to eat here. What kind of a professional, service-oriented waiter would ask such a rude question? Also, was he implying that my friend was a beggar or too poor to eat there? When, he was seated and I walked into the restaurant, he definitely was not happy and it was understandable. When a waitress came, she kept asking us what do you want to order with the look of death and I hate my job facial expression. She even told us to hurry up and order something like we owe her something or she was angry that she had to pretend to serve our table. We hinted a few times about the rude service, but no one from management cared. We were both so angry for the lack of service, we just left and they still did not care.
